W. H. L. King, whose serious illness was announced in the HERALD yesterday for the first time, died last night.

His illness came on him suddenly and his death is a surprise. Mr. King was one of our best-known citizens and was a genial and compassionable man who had many friends.

He was born in Butler, Butler County, Pa., Sept. 22, 1833, and the weight of his nearly seventy years was augmented by a runaway accident a year ago in which he was seriously injured and almost miraculously escaped death. Under the strain of both his rugged frame gave way and made him a prey to typhoid pneumonia from which he died.

Mr. King early in life learned the trade of wagon maker, and followed this occupation for several years and LeClaire, Scott County, Iowa. In 1858 he moved to Princeton, Iowa where he married Mary E. Evans, eight children being the result of the union, one boy and seven girls. Only three of them now survive, Julia, Margaret and Alice, all of whom are in Newton, where the family has resided since 1867 with the exception of about seven years spent in Pierre, S. D.

For the past few years Mr. King has been engaged in the manufacture of a weather strip and window stop of his own invention.

Mrs. King, who has been an invalid for some time, and the three daughters who have been so devoted, will miss greatly the presence and help of a kind father and will share in large measure the sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement.
