Eugene Anthony Dies This Morning

Eugene Anthony, 52, manager of the city water pumping station at Metz, died this morning [March 26, 1955] at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services to be held in Newton are pending. Moffitt Funeral Home in Mitchellville will have charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Anthony has been in the hospital for the past 2 weeks. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, March 26 1955.

Anthony Service Will Be Held Wednesday

Funeral services for R. Eugene Anthony, 53, who died Saturday at Iowa Methodist Hospital from a heart condition, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Toland Funeral Home.

The body will lie in state until Tuesday noon at the Moffitt Funeral Home in Mitchellville when it will be taken to the Toland Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery. The Rev. Howard F. Boardman, pastor of the Congregational Church, will officiate, assisted by rev. Clyde McDonald of Des Moines.

The deceased was born September 15, 1901 at Plattsmouth, Nebraska and went with his parents, Lewis and Mattie Raines Anthony to Keokuk in Lee Co. at an early age. He came to Jasper Co. at the age of 9 and received his education in the schools of Jasper Co. October 2, 1927 he married to Eva Moffitt who survives. Other survivors include a foster daughter, Mrs. James Farrel at home while her husband is in the service, 3 brothers, Hersel L. of Lakewood, California, Lewis E. and Francis of Newton; 5 sisters, Mesdames Jay Coffman, and Donovan Emmack, Newton; Fred Lunnon and George Danley, Des Moines, and Clifford Woody, Reasnor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, by one sister, Mrs. John Hitchler and 2 brothers who died in infancy.

He was employed by the city of Newton for 29 years, the past 14 as manager of the Newton pumping station near Metz. Active in Farm Bureau, he also served several years as sub director of Mound Prairie #1 school, Master of Palo Alto grange for three years. He never missed a meeting until he entered the hospital. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, March 28, 1955.
