Born on December 13, 1927 to Andrew (Andy) and Edith M. (Anderson) Maddison in Foster, Iowa, he was the eldest of five children. He attended Des Moines schools and spent most of his free time being the big brother to four younger sisters. His favorite hobbies though were fishing and cars. He would often disassemble the motors just to see what made them tick.

On August 22, 1946, he was married to Hazel Jeanette Hunter in Woodland, Iowa. Together they raised three children. In his earlier years, Richard provided for his family by working a variety of jobs including construction and packing plants. He was never found to be without work at any given time. It was later in life when his career choice took him to farming. He and his family farmed mostly in the Mingo and Derby area before he and his wife retired and moved into town in Chariton. He continued to enjoy one hobby and that was fishing. He would go as often as he could to fish the local waters around Chariton and his 'fish stories' would bring a smile to one's face.

Those left to honor Richard's memory is his wife Hazel Jeanette of Chariton, daughter Nancy (Adrian) Zoutte of Chariton, son Kenneth Maddison of Hartford, son Dennis (Michelle) Maddison of Newton. His sisters Ruth Birkenholtz of Newton, Doris (Joe) Emerson of Colfax, Rosemary Lamb of Mingo, and Bonnie (C.W.) Weyers of Newton, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death. ~ The Coburn Funeral Home Website, Colfax, Iowa.
