Mrs. George Ryan, one of the most highly esteemed and best known ladies of southwestern Jasper, met with a distressing accident on Saturday, May 6th, which resulted in her death less than a week later in Des Moines.

Mr. and Mrs. Ryan had recently moved from their old home near Prairie City to the Jasper County Coal mines near Colfax, where George was employed in the office of the company as weigher and bookkeeper. On Saturday evening Mrs. Ryan slipped and dislocated her hip, causing her the most intense suffering. Her brother, Dr. H. C. Potter of Des Moines, was sent for and later Dr. Schooler of the same place arrived to assist in setting the hip, but the operation was not successful as the bone would come out of place as soon as put in position.

Tuesday of last week she was taken to Tracy Hospital in Des Moines, where the best surgical skill could be employed in the case. Thursday afternoon, a final operation was performed, thought to be successful, but she did not rally from the anesthetics until the next day, when it was found that she was paralyzed, and death came to release her within a few hours. The interment was in Des Moines on Saturday, after funeral services in the Congregational Church. Mr. Ryan has the deepest sympathy of hosts of friends in his terrible affliction. ~ The Newton (IA) Record, Thursday, May 18 1899, Page 1, Column 6
