“Deacon Hough is dead;” this simple announcement, Tuesday afternoon, though not unexpected, carried with it a pang of sorrow to the hearts of hundreds of friends. For many years he had been afflicted with heart disease, for which he knew there was no earthly cure, and with that sweet patience so peculiar to his nature he calmly and trustingly waited for the coming of the end, bearing the suffering that marked the closing weeks of his life with true Christian grace.

Mr. Hough had been a resident of Jasper County for nearly forty-five years, coming to Newton in the fall of 1854, where he first engaged in school teaching. Later he served civil engineering. In 1856 he was elected County Clerk and held the office for six years. During the Civil War he was employed by the Government in the Provost Marshall’s office at Iowa City and other points. After the war he was actively engaged for some time in the lumber business in this city.

Joseph Bond Hough was born March 25, 1823 at Loudon, Va., where he grew to manhood. March 17, 1846, he was married to Elizabeth Hough, with whom he lived happily for forty-six years, and whose death occurred in June 1890. To them seven children were given: Josephine, Mrs. A. S. Stuver, who died in Chamberlin, S.D., in 1883; Evelyn, Mrs. Joseph Sims, who died in Chino, Cal., in 1895; Emerson Hough of Chicago; Miss Eleanor Hough, Dr. Edgar C. Hough, of Villisca; and Dr. Norman Hough, of Waterloo. One daughter, Annie, died in Virginia. His three sons were at home with their father during the last days of his life, together with the devoted daughter, who had presided over the home and cared for her aged loved one since the death of her mother.

Mr. Hough united with the Congregational Church in 1859, and has served as deacon during most of the time since. He loved his church and was always one of its pillars of strongest supports. Deacon Hough’s Christianity was never questioned by anyone – his daily walk, his kind and loving disposition always spoke louder than words.

The funeral services were held at the Congregational Church yesterday afternoon, conducted by Revs. Harrah and Baumgardner, a large number of friends being present. ~ The Newton Record, Thursday, June29, 1899, Page 1, Column 1
