Jerry Sparks

The Newton Daily Herald, Wednesday, January 28, 1903

Page 1, Column 3

While attending a sale at the farm of his grandson yesterday at noon, Uncle Jerry Sparks, one of the best known citizens of Jasper County, was stricken with paralysis at about the noon hour and was at once to his home where he died at 5 o’clock in the evening.

Mr. Sparks was about 72 years of age, lively and apparently in good health except the occasional strokes of paralysis, which afflicted him. He came to Iowa while a baby in his mother’s arms and was one of the oldest residents of the state. In 1843 he located in Jasper County, where he has ever since resided.

Mr. Sparks leaves to mourn his loss, and aged wife and four children, all well along in years, two boys and two girls, all married, the boys being residents of other states.

As we go to press it is thought the funeral will occur at 10 o’clock tomorrow.

The old homestead at the junction, where the trains starts to back into Lynnville, is familiar to everyone who has ever been down the line of the Central. Mr. Sparks was a familiar figure and no man enjoyed more fully the respect and confidence of his neighbors. He was a typical pioneer, rugged in his honest and faithful in his obligations.
