Thomas Nevins, 85, of Newton died on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at his home in Newton.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Sunday. Memorials in Tom’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Tom, the son of Herman and Anna May (Swim) Nevins, was born on July 1, 1927, in Albia, Iowa. He attended school in Oskaloosa before serving his country in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. Tom graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1947. He was united in marriage with Mary Ann Nevins on Aug. 12, 1978, in Hamburg, Iowa. They made their home in Newton for years before moving to Branson, Missouri for 13 years. They had been back in Newton for the last three years. Tom worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Jasper County for many years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the American Legion Post 111.

Those left to honor Tom’s memory are his wife, Mary Ann Nevins of Newton; daughters, Penny (Tim) Dow of Des Moines, Terry (Tim) Correy of Bettendorf, Bobbi Drye of Indianola, and Glenna “Gigi” Anthony of Altoona; his seven grandchildren, Erin (Andy) Graves, Ryan (Nicki) Dow, Rachel Dow, Alexis Drye, Sara Kern, Sean Anthony, and Nick Correy; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and the mother of Penny and Terry, Frances Fortier. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News Website.
