Howard G. Berkenbosch, 86, of Newton died on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the Mercy Hospice — Johnston in Johnston.

June 24, 1926 - January 10, 2013
Newton, Iowa

Visitation: The family will greet friends from 5:30-8 p.m., Monday, January 14, 2013 at the funeral home. A public Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m.
Funeral Service: 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Reasnor United Methodist Church, 425 Newton St., in Reasnor.
Interment: Following the funeral service and lunch on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Newton.

Those left to honor Howard's memory are his three sons, Jerry (Lynne) Berkenbosch of Ft. Myers, Florida, Howard, Jr. “Chris” (Tammy) Berkenbosch of Ankeny, and Mark Berkenbosch of Newton; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, his two brothers-in-law, Willard Sally of Newton, and Tom (Dorothy) Sally of Ames; his sister-in-law, Mary Lou (Lyle) Wilharm of Newton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Joanna in 2004; son, Dennis in 2003; two brothers, Carroll and Harold “Red” Berkenbosch; and sister, June Carnahan.

Howard was a graduate of Newton High School in 1944.

Howard was a retired Supervisor of Tool & Die Services at Plant 2 for the Maytag Company.

Howard was a member of the Reasnor United Methodist Church. He was a 50 year member and Past Master of Newton Lodge No. 59 A.F. & A.M. He was a Past High Priest of Gebal Chapter No. 12 Royal Arch Masons, Past Illustrious Master of Malachi Council No. 55 Royal and Select Masters, and Past Eminent Commander of Oriental Commandery No. 22 Knights Templar. He was a noble of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. Howard was a recipient of the Knight of Ish Sodi from the Grand Council Royal & Select Masters of Iowa, Knight Commander of the Temple (KCT) from the Grand Encampment Knights Templar of the USA, and the Knight York Cross of Honour. Howard liked to collect Corvair cars and he enjoyed bowling.

Memorials to the Reasnor United Methodist Church, Skiff Hospice, or to Mercy Hospice may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the service. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Berkenbosch Family on the envelope.
