Vernon D. McClun, 82, of Newton died on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Newton, Iowa

Memorial Service: 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 08, 2013 at the funeral home. Military Honors by American Legion Post 111 of Newton.
Visitation: 5:30-8 p.m., Monday, January 07, 2013 at the funeral home.
Interment: Immediately following the memorial service on Tuesday, January 08, 2013 at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Those left to honor Vernon's memory are his wife of 59 years, Barbara of Newton; two sons, Doug (Sue) McClun of Newton, and Duane McClun of Grinnell; daughter, LuAnn (Rick) Hunter of Newton; his granddaughter, Jennifer (Doug) Sherwood of Newton; two great-grandsons, Preston and Parker Sherwood of Newton; his brother, Jerry (Doris) McClun of Farley; sister, Betty Whitehead of Meadows of Dan, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Melissa McClun; 2 sisters, Carroll Case, and Phyllis McClun in infancy.

Vernon served his country in the U. S. States Army, from 1951-1954, during the Korean War.

Vernon was a graduate of Newton High School in 1949.

Vernon worked 43 years for the Maytag Company in Newton, retiring in 1992; he was working in the Maintenance Crib. He was a member of the Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton. Vernon enjoyed traveling to Branson, collecting baseball caps, collecting Ertl trucks, and mushroom hunting. Vernon was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Skiff Hospice or to the Community Heights Alliance Church Building Fund, memorials may be left at the funeral home. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: McClun Family on the envelope.
