Elmer Jones, 74, Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack

Elmer Jones, 74, died suddenly last night as he was enroute to his home from a meeting at Red Men lodge. When he was taken suddenly ill, a taxi was called but Mr. Jones died before the physician arrived. Death was due to coronary occlusion according to Ralph Toland, county coroner who was called on the case.

Mr. Jones was born, June 2, 1873 in Philadelphia, Penn., and came to Iowa with his parents when a child of two. He lived in the Wittemberg neighborhood until he reached the age of 16 when the family moved to Newton, where he has since spent most of his life. He had been manager of numerous chain stores in Iowa and Minnesota.

In 1921 he was married to Merle Rosebrook who with a son, Donald Jones of Gerling, Neb., and a daughter, Mrs. Paul Cooper of Los Angeles, Calif., survive. Other survivors include two step-sons, Ronald Hammitt, of East Troy, Wisc., and Harry Hammitt of St. Paul, Minn., and three nieces and four nephews.

Mr. Jones was the last remaining member of his family, his parents, one sister, Mrs. Henry Henning and two brothers, Abbie and Arthur Jones preceded him in death.

Funeral arrangements are pending word from the son and daughter. The body will lie in state at Morgan and Son Funeral Home.

The Red Men ritual services will be given at grave and members of Red Men and Pocohontas lodge will attend services in a body. ~ The Newton Daily News, Friday May 2, 1947, page 1, column 5.

Elmer Jones, Final Rites to Be Monday 4 O’clock

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 4 o’clock for Elmer Jones from the Morgan and Son Funeral home. Mr. Jones died suddenly of a heart ailment Thursday night.

The Rev. J. Wilfred Walker of the First Christian church will officiate. Mrs. Forrest Jenkins and Mrs. Cloyd Fahrney, accompanied by Mrs. H. L. Redeen, will sing “The Old Rugges Cross” and “Face To Face.”

Pall bearers will be Maurice Joy, Ray Walker, Fred Kohloff, Verne Hatcher, David Bixby and Oren Thompson. Mrs. Bixby and Oren Thompson, Mrs. Maurice Joy and Mrs. Verne Hatcher will be in charge of floral arrangements.
