Funeral services were held for Mrs. O.P. (Bertha) Walker on Wednesday, August 9th. She passed away in Phoenix, Arizona, on August 6th--her 80th birthday. A prayer service was held at 2:00 from Towland's Funeral Home in Newton and regular services at 3:00 from the United Brethren Hickory Grove church four miles southwest of Newburg. Burial was in the Hickory Grove cemetery.

The Rev. Philip Biblehimer, pastor of the First Lutheran church at Newton, conducted both services. Pallbearers were Harold McCulloch, James McCulloch, Ithel Gillespie, Walter Taylor, Denver Walker and Orville Walker. Singers were Mr. and Mrs. Keith Stahl accompanied by Mrs. Fred Hubbard.

Mrs. Walker was born in Hickory Grove township in Jasper county near Newburg on August 6, 1881, the second of three daughters of Edward and Ruth Sheppy. She received her education in the Jasper county rural schools and was a member of the U.B. Hickory Grove church.

She was married to Oliver P. Walker on June 29, 1904, and spent the majority of her life in Jasper county -- thirty-five years of which was spent on their farm near Newburg. They moved to Newton in 1945, and she remained a resident for 15 years. To this union four children were born: Loren of Pico Riviera, California, Mrs. Murray E. (Winifred) Koger of Phoenix, Arizona, Mrs. William K. (Helen ) Bush of San Bernardino, California, and Mrs. Alva L. (Wilma) Grout of Newton; twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Sadie Foreman of Marathon, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sheppy and one sister, Mrs. H.H. (Edith) McCulloch and her husband who died six years ago on August 7th only one day later than Mrs. Walker.

She went to live with a daughter, Mrs. Murray E. Koger of Phoenix, Arizona in January of 1960. She remained there for a year and had spent the last remaining seven months of her life in a nursing home in Phoenix.
