Don Allan, 78, of Newton and formerly of Baxter, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at his home with his loving wife by his side.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the church with Pastor Rollin Watters officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Don was born to Joseph and Helen (Stock) Allan in Newton, Iowa, on Dec. 1, 1933. He attended grade school at “Old Baxter” number 5 independent K-8th and then graduated from Baxter High School in 1952. After school Don began farming until he joined the Navy in 1956. He exited the Navy in 1958 and enrolled at Iowa State University. After college Don went back to farming, a career than lasted 33 years until his retirement in 1991. In February of 1972 Don married the love of his life, Sally Butler. Of this union one child was born. In 1996 Don joined the security staff at Prairie Meadows Casino and worked until his retirement in 2007.

All of Don’s life he was very active and served on many boards and committees. He was a member of Congregational Church for 56 years and held many offices there, life member of the Jasper County Historical Society, past President of the Jasper County Beef Producers, was a member of 4-H serving as a leader from 1958-1960, he served as the Independence Township clerk for 35 years, was on the Jasper County Board of Review for 21 years, and was on the Country Club Committee for 4 years. Don’s hobbies included spending time with his family, owning and operating the Baxter Gun Club, trap shooting, and sporting clay shooting. He was Jasper County Trapshooting Champion six times.

Those left to cherish Don’s loving memories are his wife of 40 years, Sally; daughter Karen (John) Sorensen; grandson Dane Sorensen; sister Margaret Gullett; sister-in-law Bonnie Sue Bulter; nephews Gary (Liz) Gullett, Larry (Connie) Gullett, David (Lori) Gullett, and Mark (Amber) Gullett; many cousins; great-nieces; great-nephews; and many friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the Congregational United Church of Christ, in Baxter, or Jasper County Historical Society, in Newton.
