Iowa State Democrat, Thursday, April 18, 1901

Henry Thomas, who for nearly thirty years has been superintendent of the Jasper County Coal Company’s mines, was killed in the mines near Colfax last Saturday. He and Bloom Ryan had gone into the mine to estimate the output of a portion of the mine, and while very near together a huge mass of slate fell upon Mr. Thomas, injuring him so that he died in twenty minutes. The coroner’s jury found it to be an accident for which no one was to blame, as the mine was properly propped. The funeral was held Tuesday, attended by a large number of the friends of the deceased.
