One of the happiest colored men we have ever known was John Hale. He died at his home in this city last Saturday morning, over 70 years of age. He was born in Virginia but while still a small boy his master moved to Missouri and there it was that John grew to manhood and later received his freedom. While a slave he married and had six children.

He came to this city twenty-seven years ago and was married to Mrs. Jane Welton of Holt County, Mo., in 1880. She still survives, as do two daughters and a son. He was a loyal member of the Methodist Church and has been for many years. Before his death he gave abundant evidence of the brightness of his hope of happiness in the life to come.

The funeral was held Monday in the A. M. E. Church and was largely attended by the friends of the deceased. His pastor, Rev. Basfield, had charge and was assisted by Rev. Doud of the Free Methodist Church.
