Newton Journal 9 Jan 1901
Death of an Old Citizen

William H. Pardoe

After a sickness that has been of thirteen years duration, Wm. H. Pardoe, who has been a citizen of Newton for the past fifty-one years, passed over to his the great beyond at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, Jan 8, 1901.

William H. Pardoe was born in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania April 20, 1828. Came to Iowa and located in Newton in April 1854. He was married by Rev. Hile, February 8, 1856 to Miss Rebecca Frances Green, who with four children survive him; Alice, now Mrs. Eugene Gillespie, of Newton; Harry, who resides in Spokane, Washington; and George, of St. Paul, Minnesota. Conley, the oldest boy, died January 12, 1881.

When Mr. Pardoe first came to Newton he worked at the carpenter trade for a number of years, but about the time the war broke out he formed a partnership with Dr. L. A. Hammer and engaged in the general merchandise business. After the war, George T. Anderson purchased Mr. Hammer's interest and a few years later Mr. Pardoe bought out the entire business and conducted a grocery store on the east side of the square until the year 1886 when he retired from active business.

Mr. Pardoe joined the Methodist church before he left his childhood home, and ever lived an upright, Christian life. He has been a familiar figure in the church and on our streets, for so long that his passing away will be like removing an important feature in the landscape of memory. He, however, lived beyond the time allotted to man and death relieved him from much pain and suffering and his relatives and friends can rest assured that he has found a haven of rest where he will be free from pain and sorrow at home with the Master whom he served so long. The funeral of Wm. H. Pardoe will be held at the home, probably on Friday. Final arrangements have not been completed.

Wm. H. Pardoe died at his home on west Main Street this city Tuesday morning at 6:20 o’clock. He had been failing gradually for some months and the end was not unexpected. Mr. Pardoe was born in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, April 30, 1828. He came to Newton in 1854 and had made this his home ever since that time. April 8, 1856 he was married to Rebecca Frances Green, who still survives the loss of her life’s companion. To their union were born five children. They are as follows: Mrs. Alice Gillespie of this city, Charles, who died Jan. 12, 1887, Harry, now of Spokane, Washington, Frank of Wausau, Wisconsin, George of St. Paul, Minnesota. Harry and Mrs. Gillespie were both present when their father died.

Deceased was in business here for many years, first with I. A. Hammer, afterward with Geo. T. Anderson. He retired from the mercantile life about fifteen years ago. He was known by all who had dealings with him as a strictly honest man, one in whom the greatest confidence could be placed. He had many friends who will mourn his departure. He had a kind heart and many will think of him with gratitude for favors extended them in times that are past.

He had been a member of the M. E. Church since a young man and ever remained true to his profession. The funeral will be held from the house Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. J. C. Willits officiating.
