Floyd Ray Springer, 80, of Newton died on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at Park Centre in Newton.

A celebration of Floyd’s life service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, conducted by Rev. Gary Marzolf of the First United Methodist Church in Newton.

The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery Veterans II Section in Newton.

Memorials to the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund, or Jasper County Freedom Flight, or Park Centre Rehab may be left at the funeral home. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Springer Family on the envelope.

Floyd, the son of Orville M. and Velma Irene (Main) Springer was born on August 26, 1932 in Newton. He was a graduate of Newton High School in 1951. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953-1954. He worked as a maintainer operator for 24 years on the Secondary Roads Department for Jasper County, retiring on April 1, 1993. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Newton Lodge No. 59 A.F. & A.M., VFW Post 1655, where he served as Jr. Vice Commander in 1991-1992. Floyd loved being with his family, he enjoyed talking to people and never knew a stranger, he liked playing cards, trading cars, camping and going to Texas for the winter.

On May 9, 1953, Floyd was united in marriage with Betty L. Spain in Reasnor, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Springer of Newton; three sons, Randy (Allyson) Springer of Newton, Dan (Kelli) Springer of Riverside and Curt (Kim) Springer of Newton; daughter, Vicki (John) Hock of Altoona; his 13 grandchildren, Brian (Jenny) Springer, Josie (Scott) Koopmans, Reed Shepard, Stacy Sutton, Tina Hock, Kendra Springer, Mindy (Jon) Hanson, Katie Springer, Eonn Springer, Samy Springer, Adri Springer, Josh (Ashley) Springer and Jami Gander; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Pauline Hackathorn of Newton; his brother, Charles (Helen) Springer of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Gloria Springer; granddaughter, Angie Hocks; and two brothers, Donald Springer and Darrell Springer in infancy. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 12, 2012.
