A private family graveside service will be held at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.Dorothy Irene Gardner was born on September 3, 1923 to Frank & Gladys Birkenholtz in Monroe, Iowa. She graduated from Newton High School in 1940 and later attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Dorothy was united in marriage with James Gardner in Corpus Christi, Texas on July 5, 1944. They were married for 61 years and had 4 children. Patricia (Charles) Butcher of Barnum, Minnesota; Barbara (Dan) Whalen of Naperville, Illinois, J. D. Gardner of Manalapan, New Jersey and Dennis (Vicki) Gardner of Newton, 10 grandchildren, Jane Carlson, Amy Hernesman, Jeffrey Butcher, Kerry Lust, Molly McInnis, Matthew Whalen, Brian Gardner, Krysta Gardner, Travis and Taryn Gardner, and 12 great grandchildren Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James. She is survived by her brother, Francis Birkenholtz, brother-in-law, Dale (Peggy) Gardner, and sister-in-law, Helen Kreager of Newton and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She especially enjoyed attending their sporting events. She was a member of Eastern Star, Palo Alto Grange, L.L. and Fireside Clubs, and her Tuesday morning coffee group. She enjoyed playing in golf leagues in Newton and Monroe and also with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing bridge and other board games. Dorothy continued spending winters in Apache Junction, Arizona where she had many good friends.
