REBECCA CONWELL
______

A Resident of Jasper County for Over Fifty Years.

Rebecca Toppin was born February 10, 1823, in Green county, Pa., and when she was 5 years of age her parents moved to Tuscarawas Co., Ohio.

In 1843 she was married to Clark Conwell. To this union were born eight children. One died in infancy, and Henry died in 1855. Mr. and Mrs. Conwell came to Iowa in 1856--being among the early settlers of this part of Iowa, they had to face the privations and hardships of pioneer life. For 45 years Mrs. Conwell lived in the immediate neighborhood of Baxter. Her husband died July 14, 1887. Mrs. Conwell, since the death of her husband, has made her home with her sons. She was a kind and loving mother and true neighbor. She was a Christian, having joined the Methodist church many years ago at Rushville, Iowa. During her illness she was patient, kind, and possessed of much vitality. She leaves to mourn her loss three sons and three daughters, viz: Robert C. Conwell, Carlos Conwell, Clark D. Conwell, Mary Conwell Webb, Charlotte Conwell Booth of Baxter, Iowa, and Mrs. Conwell Gutherie of Andover, S.D. Twenty-one grand-children, seventeen great-grand-children and a host of friends mourn the departed.

Youth fades; love droops;
The leaves of friendship fall,
But a mother's secret hope outlives them all.

Funeral services were held at her late home Sunday, November 13 at 1:30 p.m., interment in Independence cemetery.
