Dennis Ray Elliott, son of S. Ray and Charlotte Dunigan Elliott, was born Aug. 3, 1938, in Newton, Iowa. After graduating from Newton Senior High School in 1956, Dennis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After his honorable discharge in 1958, he attended Central College in Pella, Iowa and graduated in 1964.

In 1962, Dennis married Judy Rodgers Pierce and together they have three children. The couple later divorced. In 1980, he married Jean Smith. She preceded him in death in 2009. At the beginning of his career in book sales, he worked for Meredith Publishing as well as Sunset Books. Upon his return to Council Bluffs, he continued in book sales at Nelson News, until his retirement in 2009.

Dennis had a passion for learning. Included in this was his love of reading, sports, politics, westerns and enjoyed thought provoking discussions. He also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, cribbage, and spending time with family. Dennis attended Bethany Presbyterian Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

After a brief illness, Dennis passed away Tuesday, March 13th, at the age of 73 surrounded by loved ones.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean Elliott; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Those left to honor Dennis’s memory include his son, Rick (Vicki) Elliott of Newton, Iowa; daughters Susan Davis of Ravenna, Ohio, and Nancy Elliott of Atwater, Ohio; their mother, Judy (Rodgers) Pierce of Kent, Ohio; his step-children, Ray (Candie) Price of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Doris (Tim) Stark of Houston, Texas; his grandchildren, Morgan Elliott, Caitlin Elliott, Daniel Crago, Nicole Davis, Erik Davis and Justin Davis, as well as numerous step-grandchildren and great grandchildren; his sister Kathie (Gene) McWhirter of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; his brother, James (Saundra) Elliott of Lake Geneva, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Rosalie Howell, of Jacksonville, Fla.

A memorial is planned for May 27 at 12:30 p.m. at Lewis Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Heartland Christian School, Sports Program, in the name of Dennis Elliott.
