The Newton (Iowa) Journal Wednesday Dec. 11, 1889

The death of Henry C. Skiff, formerly of Malaka township, leaves a vacancy in the pioneer circles of Jasper County. Mr. Skiff came to Malaka Farm in 1856 - the township being named after the farm, and since that time has been a resident there excepting being in Louisiana a short period. He was a member of the Wittemberg church, and a life long Republican.

Mr. Skiff had a sun stroke thirty years ago, which racked his nervous system and made him a live-long sufferer, yet he was patient through it all. He was born in Nelson, Ohio, in 1832, and was never married, making his home with the family of his sister, Mrs. A. J. Logan. The funeral services were held at the Congregational Church, on Sunday, at 11 a.m., -- the very pathetic sermon by Rev. Mr. Dickinson, being of great comfort to the sorrowing family and relatives. Mr. Skiff was buried at the Wittemberg Cemetery and rests in the hope of a glorious resurrection.
