Fred Vaughan Dies Last Week

Body was Cremated Saturday Morning – Formerly Lived in this City

Word has been received here by relatives and friends that Fred W. Vaughan died at his home in San Francisco, California, Thursday, May 17, after an illness of two months.

According to the wishes of Mr. Vaughan cremation took place Saturday morning and the remains were buried in the sunny climate of California his adopted home which he grew to love so well.

He was the brother of Henry M. Vaughan and Mrs. D. J. Eberhart, of Newton, who were unable to be with him during his illness and death.

Mr. Vaughan, who was one of the well known pioneers of Newton, was born in Clinton, Michigan, but his youth and young manhood was spent in this city. In 1856 he came to Newton with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Vaughan, who were early settler in Newton. The father was a pioneer hardware merchant.

Mr. Vaughan was identified with John Deere and Company in Moline, Illinois, taking the general agency for this company in New York after having served in the home plant for a time. He was later transferred to San Francisco, California, where he later became interested in the Oliver Typewriter business. He retired eight years ago.

Mr. Vaughan was married to Mary Ogden in 1870, who was a daughter of an engineer who was located in Newton during the construction of the Rock Island Railroad.

Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan had two children but they both died when still very young. ~ The Newton Daily News, Mon 21 May 1923.
