Margaret Elizabeth Carothers was ​​born June 4, 1857 at Kimbolton, Gue​r​nsey, Ohio to Samuel​ Edward Carothers (born March 24, 1826 County Down, Ireland, died May 28, 1902 Guernsey, Ohio) and​ El​iza Ann Keowan (born July 13, 1838 Ireland, died November 30, 1925 Guernsey, Ohio). She was the first of eight children.

Margaret ma​rrie​d Robert Finley McCul​lough​ on January 1, 1878 at Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio.

The couple had 7 children:
