Oda Andersen Callison

Des Moines -- Mrs. Oda Andersen Callison, 69, of West Des Moines, died Thursday of cancer at the Kavanaugh Home in West Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Stephen Jasch, pastor of the church, and Dennis Haas of Grinnell officiating.

Music will be provided by Peggy Kolpin, pianist, and Milton Severe, vocalist.

Casket bearers will be Laura, Greg, David and Nick Callison, Angela, Trevor and Kelsey Jensen, and Joseph and Jeremy Lilly.

Cremation will follow the service and burial will be at a later date.

She was born Mar. 27, 1931 in Kellogg, to Emanuel and Christine Nielsen Andersen.

She attended schools in Kellogg and graduated with Monroe High School's Class of 1949.

On Dec. 26, 1951, she was married to Wayne Callison in Bad Axe, Michigan. The couple lived in England while Mr. Callison served in the military, and in Feb. of 1955 they moved to Monroe.

They moved to Grinnell in the fall of 1956 and she worked 31 years for Grinnell College, eventually serving as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Housing. She retired in 1997.

Mrs. Callison was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church of West Des Moines and worked as a volunteer for Lutheran Social Services, the Iowa Peace Institute, and Victims of Domestic Abuse.

Survivors include her two sons, Larry Callison of Lexington, Kentucky, and Doug Callison of Oskaloosa; three daughters, Shirley Jensen of Grinnell, Kristy Lilly of Johnston, and Corrie Callison of Columbia, Mo., nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and one sister, Nellie Ries of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Svend, Harry and Henry Andersen.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell from 12-9 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials may be directed to Lutheran Social Services or to Hospice of Central Iowa and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
