Another pioneer has been taken. Last week one of the early settlers of this section was summoned to the last roll call. Sunday morning the dark winged messenger said come, and the tired hands were folded and the weary eyes closed in death, of one that has known Prairie City from its infancy.

Mr. Daniel Shepherd has lived on the farm where he died, one mile and a quarter north of town, thirty-one years and had he lived till August 22, he would have been 73 years old.

He leaves an invalid sister, Mrs. Mary Roue, two daughters, Mrs. Scott Slaughter, living near him, and Mrs. L. A. Millsap, in California; two grandsons, Homer and Roy Millsap, whom he was educating, and who are now attending the law school in Des Moines; two other grandchildren, Mrs. John Keipp, of Colfax, John Main, Jr., living near the home farm, to mourn the loss of this venerable relative.

Mr. Shepherd retained the use of his mind up to the last, arranged all his business details, provided for some dependent upon him while he was living, sot there should be no suffering after the kind and generous heart, that had supplied the necessaries for their lives, should cease to beat. After all was done he looked up and said, “I am going,” and was no more.

Let’s weave the chaplet of flowers, and strew the beauties of nature about the grave, and pluck from this life that has ceased on earth, on the good out of his works and cherish only kindness in memory of the departed; and as we are ever willing to do our utmost for the dead, let us be more faithful in discharging our duties to the living. “A gentle word, a stubborn heart hath broken. A tear a soul hath saved.”

The funeral was held Tuesday at two o’clock p.m., at the home, Rev. M. L. Moore conducting the services. The remains were laid to rest in Waveland Cemetery. ~ The Newton Record, Friday, June 19, 1896, Page 5, Column 4 – Prairie City
