Jared Lamphier, of near Murphy, died very suddenly at his home, about nine o’clock last evening. He was in excellent health apparent, had done his work as usual during the day, and after retiring to bed, talked and played with his children. Telling them it was time to go to sleep, he turned over and was dead within a few moments. Apoplexy is said to be the cause of death. He was the son of Daniel Lamphier, was married and leaves a wife and three children. Funeral Saturday at 2 o’clock at Mt. Zion M. E. Church. ~ The Newton Record, Friday, June 12, 1896, Page 1, Column 5

Jared Lamphier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Lamphier, of Buena Vista Township, was born on the 2nd day of June 1858, in Jasper County on a farm near the home where his sudden death occurred, Thursday evening, June 11th. He was united in marriage to Miss Iona Wingett, March 31, 1887. To them were born one son and two daughters. Mr. Lamphier was a kind and devoted husband, an affectionate and indulgent father, whose home was ever made happy by his tender devotion to his loved ones. As a neighbor and friend he was kind and obliging, and enjoyed the universal esteem of all who knew him. His sudden death causes a deep gloom of sorrow to settle over the community where his entire life had been spent. Without a moment’s warning, death’s summons came and took him from his loved ones.

The funeral services were held in Mt. Zion M. E. Church, at 11 o’clock last Sunday, conducted by Rev. David Phillips; after which all that was mortal of Jared Lamphier was borne to Mt. Zion Cemetery, and by gentle loving hands, tenderly laid in their last resting place. The funeral cortege was said to be fully a half-mile in length, and was the largest ever held in the township. Besides immediate neighbors and friends, there were numbers from Newton, Kellogg, Sully, Galesburg and Reasnor in attendance and all anxious to pay the last loving tribute of respect to one whom they had known all his life. The tenderest sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved parents, wife and children in this their darkest hour of sorrow. ~ The Newton (IA) Record, Friday, June 19, 1896, Page 1, Column 3
