A Sorely Bereaved Mother

Eva, the fourteen-year-old daughther of Mrs. Alice Desmond, died of diphtheria at her home, two miles southeast of town, last Sunday morning, and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery, of the afternoon of the same day.

This is the second death in Mrs. Desmond’s family within a week, both from the same fatal malady – Willie, the youngest son, aged twelve years, having died on the Monday before. The other members of the family have all been down with the same disease, but have now recovered. It has been a season of sore trials to the widowed mother, a burden almost beyond her strength to bear, and yet one which she must bear alone almost, as the nature of the disease prevented the kindly ministration of friends which otherwise would have been gladly rendered. ~ The Newton [IA] Record, Friday, May 8, 1896, Page 1, Column 1
