At noon on Easter Sunday, Mr. Jeff M. Stone, for many years a resident of this city, died at the home of his son, Virgil, in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he had been for some time receiving treatment for cancer, from which he had suffered for many months, and which caused his death. The news of his suffering and death are the source of profound sorrow to his old friends here, among whom he was highly respected and esteemed during his residence here over twenty years.

Mr. Stone’s age was seventy-six years. He was a native of Licking County, Ohio, born in July 1820. While a young man he was engaged in successful business in the city of New York. In June 1856, he was united in marriage to Miss Kate M. Winslow, a sister of H. S. and W. C. Winslow and Mrs. Lucy Failor, of this city, the ceremony being performed at the old Winslow homestead, just south of the fair ground, which afterward came into his possession and was his home for a number of years. In 1886 they left Newton for Nebraska and have resided in Ord for a number of years. While Mr. Stone was a resident of this city he was in possession of a cure for cancer, with which he successfully treated many cases. And after he had saved so many others from that dread disease, it is strange that he should himself fall la victim to its fatal attack. Mr. Stone’s cancer was on the right side of the face, just in front of the ear. It was at first thought to be a tumor of harmless character, and was treated as such until the disease had taken such hold on him as to be beyond the reach of human skill. He leaves a wife and one son. ~ The Newton (IA) Record, Friday, April 10, 1896, Page 1, Column 3
