The sad information reached Newton yesterday morning of the death of Mr. Alfred Mercer, which occurred at his home in Colfax, Wednesday. Mr. Mercer had been a resident of Galesburg for over thirty years, until about four years ago, when failing health caused him to move to Colfax, hoping that the use of the mineral waters would check the advance of the disease and finally restore him to health. His disease was muscular rheumatism, from which he had been a great sufferer for over five years. His age was about sixty. He leaves a widow and two children – a son and daughter. The funeral services were at two o’clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Mercer was a man of whom nothing but good words could be spoken, and his death will cause great sorrow among his old neighbors with whom so many of his years had been spent. ~ The Newton (IA) Record, Friday, April 17, 1896, Page 1, Column 3
