Mrs. Susan Smith died at her home in this city, at 9:15, Sunday morning, February 23rd, aged sixty-six years and one day. She had been an invalid for about three years, and was a great sufferer during the greater part of that time, but the simple trusting faith of Christianity never failed her; she bore all without a murmur and the final summons found her ready to enter into her reward for long years of faithful service of the master.

Mrs. Smith’s maiden name was also Smith. She was born near Petersburg, Penn., February 22, 1830, where she grew to womanhood, and was married to John M. Smith, November 29, 1854. In 1866 they came to Iowa, and settled on a farm at Rushville, four miles northwest of Kellogg. They afterward lived on the farm now owned by Joseph Cooper, north of Newton, where Mr. Smith died about twenty-three years ago, leaving Mrs. Smith a widow with three little sons to care for and prepare for manhood; and well she did her part toward them. They all survive her – Oliver and Clinton of this city, and Elijah, of Cainville, Mo.

In 1884 Mrs. Smith, with her three sons, moved to town, where the boys provided for their mother a comfortable home, and their watchful care has been over her until her death. No boys ever did a nobler part toward their mother than they. During her long illness the eldest, Oliver, has been with her constantly, never tiring in his devotion to her comfort, aided by Elijah and Clinton whenever it was possible for them to be at home from their business.

Mrs. Smith was converted and untied with the M. E. Church at Rushville, in 1868, and her pure Christian character has marked her life until its close. The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church at 2 o’clock on Tuesday, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. V. Cowan. ~ The Newton Record, Newton, IA, Friday, February 28, 1896, Page 1, Column 1
