Death of Grandmother Hill

This good lady died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Rhodes, in Palo Alto Township, last Monday, at the advanced age of ninety-one years. Her maiden name was Jane Marshall; she was born in Drumna Ho Tyrone County, Ireland, in 1805, and married Hugh Hill in 1824. They emigrated to America, settling in Pennsylvania, in 1853, and in the spring of 1854, came to Newton, where her husband died in January 1855, aged 47.

She was the mother of twelve children, six sons and six daughters, eight of whom are still living, and were present at the funeral of their mother yesterday. They are: Mrs. Jane Matchett, Robert, William and George Hill, Mrs. Maria Rhodes, Mrs. Sarah Monlux and Mrs. Nannie Campbell, of this city and County, and Mrs. Maggie Reese of Kansas.

Mrs. Hill was a devout Christian and a member of the U. P. Church for a great many years. She was one of the charter members of the church in Palo Alto Township, where the funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. McKee. The interment was in the Newton Cemetery. ~ The Newton (IA) Record, Friday, March 6, 1896, Page 4, Column 2
