Ellen F. Loyd was born in Wolf County, Virginia, Dec. 11th, 1818, at the age of sixteen years she removed to Highland Co., Ohio.

She was united in marriage to Joseph Hill, Jan. 25, 1836, and they continued to reside at the old home until the year 1846 when with their family they removed to Iowa and settled near Monroe, Iowa; her husband’s health failing, they removed to town and she continued to reside here until the time of her death, March 4, 1896, at the good old age of 77 years and two months and 23 days.

Her husband died Sept. 10, 1884.

She was the mother of nine children, six of whom survive her, 4 sons and 2 daughters. Three of her children were with her in her last illness, George and Jefferson Hill and Mrs. Amanda Roach.

At an early age mother Hill was converted and joined the M. E. Church. She continued a faithful member until called to the church above. Of her daily life all who knew her will bear witness to her exemplary character. Constant in season and out; always ready to do her part in church and home, giving and nursing the sick; cheerfully, kindly and affectionate.
