Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Smith came to Newton from Des Moines some seven years ago. He is a jeweler by profession, and was at first employed by D. Sturdevant & Son, but for several years had been doing business for himself. His age is about 45 years, while Mrs. Smith was some older – 55 next April. Mrs. Smith had been married three times. Her maiden name was Hannah A. Reid and her first husband was a cousin of the same name, to them was born four children. Her second marriage was to a man by the name of Embree, by whom she had three children – the widow of Charles Phares, author of the terrible tragedy, Phil Embree, well known here, and Mrs. Anna French, of Prairie City. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were married at Atlantic, July 5, 1885. They came to Newton about 7 years ago.
They were both Christians, and earnest, faithful member of the M. E. Church. They have a large circle of warm friends who feel terribly the shock of the tragedy that has so suddenly destroyed this happy Christian home.
The funeral of Mrs. R. T. Smith was held at the M. E. Church at 2 o’clock this Friday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. W. Cowan. A large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors were present. ~ The Newton Record, Friday, February 14, 1896, Page 1, Column 21
