Bill “Bones” Jensen left his earthly life on Monday, March 7, 2011, at Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends with a lunch at the funeral home following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Hospice of Jasper County, the University of Iowa Foundation I-Club, or St. Luke United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home.
Bill was born at home in Latimer, Iowa on June 4, 1933 to Lawrence Jensen and Gwen Potter Jensen. His family moved to Hampton, Iowa in his early childhood and he graduated from Hampton Community Schools in 1953. He was known for his athletic abilities, especially in baseball and basketball. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1954 and played baseball in Germany and other parts of Europe while in the Special Services.
Bill was united with Zana Sue Singer of Webster City on May 3, 1957 in Hampton. The couple made their home in Hampton until moving to Newton in 1986. He worked for the Maytag Company for 28 years, retiring in 1992. While his sons were growing, he was very involved in the Franklin County Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball, where he coached, served on the board, and helped out in any way he could.
Next to his family, his two loves were the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. He was also a true Democrat who could always get a good political conversation going. He loved to talk and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed his daily coffee group at the Midtown Café. He was a member of the UAW Local 997, the American Legion, the Democratic Party, the University of Iowa I-Club, and volunteered as a greeter at Skiff Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Curt in 2007; and two sisters, Barbara and Esther.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Zana Sue Jensen of Newton; son, Jeff (Liz) Jensen of Bowling Green, Ky.; 2 granddaughters, Emily Jensen of Nashville, Tenn. and Rachel Jensen of Bowling Green; daughter-in-law, Marsha Jensen of Washington, Iowa; his sister, Lois Daum of Buckeye; 2 brothers, Donald (Linda) Jensen of Oelwein and Larry Jensen of Hampton; his brother-in-law, Charles (Ann) Singer of Bloomington, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Lyn Barnes of Newton.
