Alice Irene Samson, the daughter of Arie and Irene (Vande Lune) Van Ryswyk, was born Dec. 30, 1937, in Runnells, Iowa. She was baptized in the Prairie City Christian Reformed Church. Alice graduated in 1956 from Prairie City High School. After graduation, she worked for Bankers Life and the Maytag Company.
On May 20, 1960, Alice was united in Marriage to Robert “Bob” Samson at the Reformed Church in Prairie City. After their marriage, Alice was able to stay home and devote her life to what she wanted to do the most, being a good wife and a great mother. Upon marriage they lived in Knoxville, Sully and Baxter, until moving to their current home, which they built together in rural Newton.
Alice was a member of the former Community Reformed Church, where she was actively involved in the life, work and worship of the church. Alice was a devoted wife, mother and grandma. Alice was a friend to everyone. Alice enjoyed working with Bob on the farm. She also enjoyed doing crafts, sewing and had a great love for music. The highlight of her year was when they could pack their camper and head to either Texas or Arizona.
Alice went to be with her Lord, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Feb. 11, 2011, at the age of 73.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband of 50 years, Robert “Bob”; two daughters and son-in-laws, Lori and Dave Stanley of Osage and Patti and Jeff Olson of Cedar Falls; and four grandchildren Kyle and Kayla Stanley and Caleb and Collin Olson.
She is also survived by three brothers, Don Van Ryswyk of Denver, Colo.; Bob (Grace) Van Ryswyk of Pella; Art (Betty) Van Ryswyk of Prairie City; one sister, Doris (Chuck) Logdson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by their son, Steven Robert in September 1975, and her parents, grandparents and a baby sister.
A celebration of life service for Alice will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 14, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or the Cowboy Church may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.
