Duane Yoder, 83, of Newton died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at his home in Newton.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Pastor David Rex and Pastor Eldon Pals officiating. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Omer and Nettie (Hooley) Yoder, Duane was born June 4, 1927, in rural Parnell, Iowa. He was a graduate of Parnell High School and attended Heston College in Kansas. On Sept. 12, 1947, Duane was united in marriage to Viola Yoder in Newton. He grew up in Parnell before moving to Wayland and Fairfield, before making his home in Newton in 1966.
Duane worked for Farm Bureau insurance for close to 30 years, first as an agent then later as a manager. On Nov. 7, 2008, he was united in marriage to Sandra Slesinski Goering in Newton.
Duane was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Izaak Walton League and Farm Bureau. He enjoyed many activities including church, singing, hunting, traveling, spending quality time with his grandkids, taking care of the lawn and flowers and socializing with his many extended family members and friends. He also liked to do woodworking, go fishing, coffee time with his friends and eating desserts he wasn’t supposed to have.
Duane is survived by his wife, Sandra Yoder of Newton; two daughters, Becky (John) Neff of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Kathy (Jim) Collins of Helena, Mont.; two sons, Gary (Lori) Yoder of Newton and John Yoder of Newton; two step-daughters, Melissa McSparen of Newton and Mary Cass of Newton; one step-son, Martin Watters of Altoona; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathryn Yoder of Wellman, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Viola E. “Vi” Yoder in 2006; son, Lee Yoder; brother, Russell Yoder; and a grandson, Seth Watters.
