Lawrence Layne Kono was born Nov. 16, 1934, in Newton, Iowa, to Lawrence G. and Iris Sterling Kono. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1953. He served in the United States Army for two years, excelling in marksmanship.
Layne and Senna Fisher were married on Aug. 14, 1955, at the Methodist Church in Newton. They had been high school sweethearts after meeting at a dance at the Masonic Lodge where Layne had played the saxophone in the band when he was 16 years old. Layne and Senna were blessed with two daughters: Karen and Darcy.
Layne ran Brown’s Shoe Fit in Chariton for 18 years and then worked at Hy-Vee in Data Processing for 20 years. Layne had three main passions: God, family and music. He always had a great love for music, but after retiring he was able to focus more on his passion of music. He recorded several albums including “Worn Out Sax” and played in local celebrations and bands.
Layne was ornery, loved to joke and visit with everyone. He adored his family and absolutely loved his girls and grandchildren.
Layne is survived by his wife of 55 years, Senna of Chariton; daughters, Karen (Keith) Halfpop of Branson and Darcy (Tom) Dubuc of Ankeny; four grandchildren, Matt Overland, Nate Overland, Audrey Major and Kalina Dubuc; brother, Wayne (Kay) Kono of Newton; sister-in-law, Pamela (Richard) Meyers of Vermont; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
