Donald B. Metz, 83, of Newton died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
A funeral mass is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with Father William Reynolds and Deacon Dan Goetz officiating. The family will greet friends tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to VFW Post 1655 may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the day of the service.
The son of Barney and Loretta (Dittmer) Metz, Donald was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Rosemount, Iowa. He graduated from Southeast Warren High School, and he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On Sept. 6, 1950, Donald was united in marriage to Hilda Putz in Rosemount. He retired from Winpower after 30 years, then worked at Newton Manufacturing for a few years after that. He was a member of the UAW, VFW Post 1655 and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Donald enjoyed spending time with his family and never missed any of his kids’ or grandkids’ events. He also enjoyed dancing, playing cards and bingo and walking his dogs.
Donald is survived by his wife, Hilda Metz of Newton; three sons, Steve (Patricia) Putz of Newton, Dennis (Bernice) Metz of Sioux City and Delbert (Susan) Metz of Newton; one daughter, Diana (Ed) Ergenbright of Newton; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lester Metz of Des Moines and Marvin “Duffy” (Rosie) Metz of Indianola; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Eric Ergenbright; his granddaughter, Angie Ancer; a brother, Herbert Metz; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Metz.
