Killed By Lightning. - last Thursday afternoon at a little past six o'clock, Mr. Fred Veat, living in Mariposa Township, was instantly killed by lightning. In the forenoon he and his wife had been to Kellogg, where he had made final settlements with quite a number of merchants, and his friends now think that he had a premonition of what was about to happen to him.

He had got home and gone to attend to some farm work, when the severe storm came up. His wife saw him coming home, and near the barn, when rain began to fall. As he did not come into the house, she thought he had sought shelter in the barn. After the storm was over, and he did not come into the house, she went out and found him dead about 3 rods distance from the barn.

The electric fluid had evidently struck him on the top of his head, (which was all covered, when found, with red pimples), and it passed through his body and out through his shoes, as the latter, while not torn from his feet were ripped and split in several places.

He was worthy, hard-working young man, highly respected and honored by those who knew him, had been married about a year, and leaves a wife and a young babe. ~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, June 21, 1893
