Quinn, Dorothy B. – 1915-2010

Dorothy B. Quinn of rural Newton passed from this life July 31, 2010. She was born Oct. 12, 1915, to her parents, David H. Craven and Jane N. Craven. She spent her childhood years on the Craven farm located North of Kellogg, Iowa. During the school year, the Craven children lived in Grinnell so that they had the advantage of attending the Grinnell Community Schools.
In 1934, she married Erville Veber. To this marriage were born two sons, Garry Veber and Gayle Veber. Dorothy and Erville owned and operated a very successful business in Kellogg, Veber Oil Company. In 1947, Dorothy was widowed. She continued to own and operate Veber Oil Company for several more years.
In 1950, she married Carl Quinn, a Newton area farmer. To this marriage two children were born, Kirke Quinn and Kent Quinn. In 1956, the family moved to the Quinn farm north of Newton. Dorothy was extremely involved in the farming operation and served as a homemaker. In 1971, her husband, Carl, died. She continued to be very instrumentally involved in farming activities for the balance of her life.
Dorothy enjoyed fishing and vacationing at her Lake of the Woods cottage. She was particularly fond of the summers that she spent at the lake with her friends following her retirement. She was a very active reader. She enjoyed keeping abreast of world affairs, local affairs and the latest farming issues.
Her primary focus in life was her children and her grandchildren. She was always available for advise, counsel and help. Her best times were times spent with her family, particularly with family celebrations at her farm home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Erville Veber, and Carl Quinn; her son, Garry Veber; her grandson, Kreg Veber; and her many brothers and sisters.
Surviving her are her sons, Gayle Veber (Carol) of Wilsonville, Ore., Kirke Quinn of Boone, Iowa, and Kent Quinn (Sharon) of Des Moines, Iowa, and her daughter-in-law Mary Veber of Briarwood, Texas. She also is survived by her sister, Joyce Craven of Grinnell, Iowa. Dorothy is further survived by nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at the Wallace Family Funeral Home, 1115 E. 19th St. N., Newton, Iowa, on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Kellogg Historical Society, 218 High St., Kellogg, Iowa 50135
