Funeral services for Mary Louise Bovenkamp-Smith, 90, who died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 30, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton.
A visitation with the family will be held from 12:30 p.m. Friday until service time, at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorials in Mary’s name are being designated to Hospice of Jasper County or to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.pencefh.com. Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery.
Mary Louise Bovenkamp-Smith, the daughter of George C. and Edna Sarah (Kling) Shelley, was born June 20, 1920, in rural Jasper County, Iowa. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, she was a Newton High School graduate, Class of 1938, and later attended a year at Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines.
On March 9, 1941, Mary was united in marriage to Leland G. Bovenkamp in Missouri. To this union were born two children, Larry and Judy. Leland would precede Mary in death on Nov. 23, 1950. Mary was employed as an accountant with Winpower Manufacturing in Newton. She later married Francis W. Smith on June 29, 1956, in Reasnor. She devoted her life to her family and friends, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton and R.S.V.P.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leland; her second husband Francis on Sept. 16, 1977; and her brother, Les Shelley.
Those left to honor Mary’s memory include her daughter, Judy (Richard) Yerian of Oregon/Arizona; her son, Larry (Ann L.) Bovenkamp of Newton; her three grandchildren, Michelle (Steve) Johnson of Des Moines, Jon (Michelle)Bovenkamp of Muscatine, and David Bovenkamp of Dallas, Texas; her four great-grandchildren, Abigail, Lauren, Nicole and Nathan; a sister, Lucille Mitchell of Michigan; and her many friends.
