A celebration of life service for Chris Smith, 87, of Newton will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Memorials in Chris’ name can be made to the Newton Foursquare Church or Progress Industries. A time for conversation and lunch at the Moose Lodge in Newton will follow the celebration service.
The son of Charlie and Lydia Pearl (Knittle) Smith, Chris was born Oct. 16, 1922, near Colfax, Iowa. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, he was one of four siblings: Leslie Knittle, William E. Smith and Alice Mary Fowler. Chris devoted his life to others, was a member of the Jasper County Care Facility’s Bell Choir, playing the “F” bells, and was a member of the Foursquare Church in Newton. He enjoyed traveling to Camp Sunnyside near Des Moines with Progress Industries, trips with Off the Beaten Path, his music, dancing, photography with his own camera, rug weaving and being a “Grandfather” to children at the YMCA Child Care Center.
Chris died on Sunday evening, July 25, 2010, at the Newton Health Care Center. He was preceded in death by his parents and several of his siblings.
Those left to honor Chris’ memory are his many friends at church, Progress Industries and at Newton Health Care. Chris will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Just prior to services at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., Newton, IA. The funeral will be Thursday at 1:30 at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, Newton with Dr. M. DeWayne Anderson officiating, pastor of the First Assembly of God Church.
Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery, Newton.
