Ray D. Alston, 61, of Newton died on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
A private family burial will be at the Haines Cemetery in Centerville at a later date. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Jasper County Honor Flight for Korean & Vietnam Veterans may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Pat of Newton; two sons, Kirk Alston of Newton and Jeremy (Amber) Barber of Centerville, Iowa; daughter, Shanan (Stan) Schmidt of West Point, Iowa; his five grandchildren, Gideon, Lakin and Evan Barber and Lexi and Alyse Schmidt; and sister, Polly (Ray) Titcomb of Tama, Iowa.

Ray D. Alston was born June 16, 1949
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and June (Collins) Alston; son, Scott; and sister, Shirley Alston.
Ray served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
Ray was a graduate of Tama High School in 1968 and attended Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids.
Ray was a member of the 9th Battalion, and he was a Lifetime Member of the North American Fisherman Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, outdoors, traveling, and playing with his grandchildren.
