Raymond P. Van Gilst, 79, of Newton died Friday, June 18, 2010, at his home in rural Newton.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Forrest Whitlach officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.
Memorials to the American Heart Association may be left at the funeral home.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Marge of rural Newton; four sons, Raymond (Donice) Van Gilst of Sacramento, Calif., Don (Deb) Van Gilst of Newton, Bob (Cheryl) Van Gilst of Los Lunas, N.M., and David (Dorcas) Van Gilst of Pine Bluff, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Abigail, Christy (Chris), Cody (Kacey), Daniel, Lisa (Tim), Lindsay, Katie, Lauren, Emily, Grace, Sarah, Elizabeth (John) and Abi; and his sister, Marlene (Marvin) DeGraaf of Prairie City, Iowa.

Raymond Van Gilst was born March 09, 1931.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Peter and Marie Van Gilst.
Raymond was a lifelong resident of Jasper County and a lifelong farmer.
He was a member of the Community Heights Alliance Church and enjoyed blue grass music and visiting with people.
