Pretty 19-Year Old Girl Succumbs to Revolver Wound About Noon Today
MONROE – Beulah Munger, pretty 19-year old Jasper county rural school teacher, died about noon today as the result of a .22 caliber revolver wound in her abdomen.
Jasper county authorities this afternoon were investigating the affair, which they said, took place in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Munger in Monroe. Present indications, they said, are that the wound was self-inflicted.
Was Home Alone
The girl was home alone this morning. Her father was away for the day and her mother was attending a Sunday School picnic.
The mishap is believed to have occurred about 11:00 to 11:30 o’clock this morning in the dining room of the home. A .22 caliber revolver and blood stains were found there this afternoon.
The girl then is believed to have walked through the living room out to the front porch of the house and there toppled over on the steps where she was found sometime later.
Neighbors, noticing her on the steps, at first didn’t think anything wrong, they told County Attorney Luther M. Carr who with Sheriff Ray E. Barber were called. And neighbors said she may have lain there for 30 minutes before they noticed something wrong. Immediately upon investigation, help was summoned and the girl was placed in a car and rushed to the Skiff Memorial hospital at Newton.
Dies on Way to Hospital
She died on the way.
The car was driven by R. B. Gloyd, accompanied by Burton Zerley.
The girl had seemed in good health and good spirits. She had been to Newton Monday evening for a time.
She had been teaching in the rural schools and was to take a school at Killduff next year.
A graduate of Monroe High school, she was popular in Monroe and had a large acquaintance there. On July 4, 1939, she was selected to represent Monroe at the county Fourth of July celebration in Newton where she was named second in the countywide beauty contest held in connection with the celebration.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Munger, and one brother Carroll Munger.
The body was taken today to the Crumpacker Funeral home at Monroe to await funeral arrangements.
County Coroner Ralph V. Toland said this afternoon that he was not sure whether an inquest would be called or not. He said an investigation is under way.
