Rex Rayford Thompson, 68, died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at his home.
A memorial service was conducted on Wednesday, March 24.
Survivors include his wife, Linda of Grinnell; his mother, Colleen of Newton; four children, James Thompson of Grinnell, Lola Richards of Fort Dodge, John Thompson of Grinnell and Shandy Tuttle of Kellogg; one brother, Rick Thompson of Newton; three sisters, Sandy Bird and Rena Miller, both of Newton, and Linda Long of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren, Nick Bookout, Teresa, Jess, David, Destiny, Haley, Jessica, Zoey and Johnelle Thompson and Justin and Jamie Tuttle; and three great-grandchildren, Thomas and Raiden Bookout and Ty Thompson.

Rex Thompson, 68, of Grinnell died March 21, 2010, at his home. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson of Grinnell, officiating. Honorary bearers will be James and John Thompson, Keith Richards, Jerry Neal, Brent Plowman, and Tom Enlow. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Rex Thompson Memorial Fund.
Rex was born June 30, 1941, in Iowa City, the son of Oren Kirby and Colleen Rexroat Thompson. He was raised in the Newton area and attended rural school in Jasper County.
On June 20, 1970, he was united in marriage to Linda K. Springer, in Newton. The couple lived in Newton and later moved to Grinnell in 1974. He was formerly employed at Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg and Miracle Recreation in Grinnell. In 1983, he began working for the City of Grinnell in the maintenance department. He retired in 1993.
Rex enjoyed playing cribbage and Blackjack, shooting pool and bowling. He was a member of a mixed bowling league in Newton for several years. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved riding his motorcycle. He also enjoyed the company of his dog, Snuggles and taking her on walks.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oren and his brother, John Thompson.
