Additional information from Smith Funeral Home website:
Jim was born on November 1, 1953 in Eldora, Iowa to his parents Clarence Rollie Robert Duncan and Opal Elizabeth Lender. He was raised in the Grinnell surrounding area. After his education, he moved to Texas to work for his brother in-law Jim Henry for a short time. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He then began working for Maytag in 1976. Jim was united in marriage to Bev Breeden on October 20, 1979 in Montezuma, Iowa. The couple lived in rural Grinnell and Jim continued his dedicated career working for Maytag until his retirement in 2006.
Jim was a very generous, caring and fun loving person. He held a passion for restoring and modifying old cars, building drag cars and participating and attending NHRA events locally and around the US. You could always catch a smile on his face as he was playing on his tractors, giving keys back to friends and family after fixing their cars for them, always at no charge, and lovingly teasing his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Bev Duncan of Grinnell; his mother, Opal Duncan of Brooklyn, Iowa; his siblings, Faye Smith of Waterloo, Iowa, Lucy DeHoedt of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Robert (Donna) Duncan of Watauga, Texas, Debbie (Ed) Dursky of Ottumwa, Iowa, Duane (Taka) Duncan of Okinawa, Japan, Barb Duncan of Richmond, California, Rick Duncan of Hudson, Wisconsin, and Vicki (Ben) Smith of Shirley, Massachusetts; and 32 nieces and nephews, 35 great nieces and nephews and 1 great-great niece. He was preceded in death by his father; his siblings, Ollie Duncan and Ruth Henry; his brothers-in-law, Rich DeHoedt and Mike Smith; and his sister-in-law, Debbie Breeden.
