Magdalen “Maggie” Connors, 69, of Newton died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at the Hospice of Jasper County in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A memorial service will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton on March 20 at 11 a.m.
Magdalen Lucy Mohrhauser was born July 24, 1940, in Danbury, Iowa. She was the daughter of Emmett and Lucy (Schoenherr) Mohrhauser. She graduated in 1958 from Lake View High School in Lake View, Iowa, and attended St. Joseph nursing school in Sioux City, Iowa.
Magdalen married Duane Connors Feb. 4, 1961, in Sioux City, Iowa. Magdalen, Duane and their children moved to Kellogg in 1965 and to Newton in 1973. Maggie worked at Skiff Memorial Hospital from 1973 to 1983, most of her career as an EKG technician. After her retirement from Skiff, Maggie taught popular water exercise classes at the YMCA of Newton.
Family, friends, coworkers and students remember Maggie for her fun-loving, energetic and creative personality. She enjoyed traveling, including to Italy, Ireland, Bermuda, Hawaii and throughout the western United States. Her interests also included crochet, gardening, bird watching, hunting, fishing and gathering of wild mushrooms, asparagus and other offerings in nature. She liked playing characters, even acting in a play through the Newton Community Theatre. She included friends and family in her fun, frequently hosting gatherings on the patio near her garden.
Maggie is preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Lucy Mohrhauser; her brother, Ronald Mohrhauser; and her sister, Sharan Keller. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Duane Connors; her children, Sheralee Connors of Portland, Ore., Brendalee Connors and her wife, Sara Kammer, of Denver, Colo., and Dale Connors and his wife, Sue Connors, of Littleton, Colo.; her grandchildren, Kate John, Davis Connors and Willa Connors; her sisters, Linda Drilling of Deming, N.M., and Christie Edwards (husband John) of Kittredge, Colo.; her brothers, Emmett Gerald Mohrhauser (wife Kersten) of Lake View, Iowa, and George Mohrhauser (wife Jean) of St. Cloud, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Memorials should be made to Hospice of Jasper County.
