MONROE — Paul W. Herder, 77, of Monroe died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb, 13, 2010, at the Monroe United Methodist Church, with burial following at Silent City Cemetery. The family will greet friends following the burial at the church during a luncheon. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The son of Paul Walter and Margaret (Applegate) Herder, Paul was born on March 3, 1932, in Edgemont, South Dakota. On September 8, 1954, He was united in marriage to Mary Moser in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Paul served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following the service, Paul went to work at Maytag in Newton, where he worked for 36 years, retiring in 1993. Paul was a member of the Monroe American Legion and also served on both the Monroe City Council and Monroe School Board. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, bird watching and playing cribbage.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Mary of Monroe, six children, Karen (Stan) Lester of Des Moines, Paul (Songae) Herder of Montrose, CO., Cheryl (Erik) Hansen, Kansas City, KS., Lynn (Steve) Peterson of Chamberlain, SD, Jan (Ryan) Phifer of Monroe and Mary (Don) Vaske also of Monroe; 10 grandchildren, Jacob, Geoffrey, & Zachary Peterson, Drew, Jeremy and Mesa Herder, Rachel & Braden Phifer and Meghan and Joshua Phifer; three step grandchildren, Richard Hansen, Michele and Aaron Geerer as well as a brother, Gerry (Jo) Herder of Thornton, CO and a sister, Margaret (Paul) Cavanagh of Grand Junction, CO. Preceding Paul in death were his parents and a sister, Theresa Ferrell.
