Death of Mother Rater.
Mrs. Sarah S. Romans Rater, widow of the late Daniel Rater, died at her home in Reasnor, May 10, (1910) aged 73 years, 5 months and 21 days. Mrs. Rater was born in Kentucky, November 19, 1836. She came with her parents to Iowa in 1847, and on May 16, 1852 was married to Daniel Rater and to them were born ten children, eight of whom survive her, Viz: William G. Rater, Adair; George A. Rater, Reasnor; Mrs. Martha M. McCroskey, Asbury D Rater, Casey; Mrs. Philema P. Mortimor, Adair; Mrs. Mary A. Farris, Monroe; Mrs. Lucy E. DeHoet, Hazel Run, Minnesota; Mrs. Florence D. Lufkin, Reasnor. All of her children excepting Mrs. DeHoet were with her when she died, and she was hastening to the bedside of the dear mother but did not arrive until about two hours after the spirit had taken its flight.
Mother Rater’s married life, with the exception of a brief time in Kansas, was spent in Jasper County. She was one of the charter members of the “Tool’s Chapel Class” of the Methodist Episcopal Church, her name appearing in the record of December 9, 1853. Of the ten names on the list then, only two are now living in the vicinity of the old chapel-James A. Tool and Mrs. J. A. Woody nee Wright.
Besides her children she is survived by two brothers and three sisters, thirty-three grandchildren, and twenty-six great-grandchildren. Her husband died June 6, 1904.
Funeral services were at the M. E. Church in Reasnor, conducted by her Pastor, Rev. H. C. Millice, and the interment was in the cemetery at Monroe. ~ Newspaper unknown.
