Helen G. Colyn, age 91 of Monroe died Thursday, December 31, 2009, at her home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe Presbyterian Church with burial following at Silent City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, from 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Monroe Presbyterian Church.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Helen G. Colyn Memorial Fund and online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The daughter of Henry and Alta (Deaton) Shannon, Helen was born on July 19, 1918, in Mingo, Iowa. On April 18, 1937, she was united in marriage to Clifford Colyn in Runnells, Iowa. Helen was a member of the Monroe Presbyterian Church where she served for many years as the custodian. She also helped cook for the Monroe Kiwanis. She lived in Monroe for over 65 years.
Those left to honor her memory are her daughter, Shirley LaPour of Monroe, a daughter-in-law, Marlys Colyn of Baxter; six grandchildren, Clint Martin of Monroe, Tom (Christie) Wilson of West Des Moines, Rory (Chrystle) Colyn of Knoxville, Rhonda (Lonny) Barr of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Janelle (Dwayne) Maasdam of Lynnville, and Joel (Cindy) Colyn of Baxter; 13 great grandchildren, Daphanie Chirch, Leisha Colyn, Kevin Colyn, Monica Martin, Justin Martin, Scott Colyn, Zachary Maasdam, Taylor Maasdam, Allison Colyn, Trenton Colyn, Ben Wilson, Mallory Wilson, and Trey Wilson; four great great grandchildren, Chloe Chirch, Ethan Chirch, Alexis Colyn and Kaden Colyn as well as a sister, Marlene (Bill) Ver Steeg of Knoxville. Preceding Helen in death were her parents, husband in 1990, a daughter, Twila at birth; sons, Don and Bill; sisters, Violet and Jean Shannon and brothers, Wayne, Harlan, Marlan, and Max.
Interment at Silent City Cemetery.
